The present Society was formed in 1967 as a result of the Recreation Committee putting forward the idea as part of Canada's 100th Centenary celebrations. There was a lot to learn such as how to put on flower shows, introduce speakers, and acquire judges. The first flower shows were somewhat devoid of entries but as membership and confidence grew, the calibre of the exhibits reflected the enthusiasm and competence of our members. In 1997 the Society adopted the Foxglove as its floral emblem.
The current interest in gardening and the recent growth of the Uxbridge area has meant an increase in our membership, and participation in our monthly flower shows grows each year.
During the year the Society holds three plant and bake sales and a Garden Tour. These are used to raise funds. Our Annual Flower Show is held on the second Saturday in August. Tea, juice and dessert are served to the public between 2 pm and 4:30 pm; during this time, the public can view the achievements of our members.
In 1998 we hosted the Ontario Horticultural Association, District 17, Annual Meeting and Show and in 2001 District 17 hosted the Ontario Horticultural Association Convention at the Regal Constellation in Toronto.
In the year 2002 the society celebrated it’s 35th anniversary. A children’s garden at the rear of the Public Library has been landscaped to mark this special anniversary.
In 2003 a new banner was designed, incorporating the theme of the previous banner, and quilted by Muriel Taylor.
In 2006 the Society developed a better working relationship with the town. The Executive worked to get the town to hire a part time person over the summer to help us maintain all of the gardens on public land throughout the town.
In 2007 we celebrated our 40th anniversary as a club. We had the most successful promotion the society has ever had with the sale of 1200 cookbooks. We also started a project to develop a rock garden on the hill outside the library.
